Our History

Established in 1985, the Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) is operated by MxV Rail, a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads.

Our original mission was to train railroad officials to safely handle accidents involving tank cars carrying hazardous materials. The training proved to be so successful that attendance was opened up to other emergency responders. We now serve not only the transportation service industry, but also the public sector emergency response community, the chemical industry, government agencies, and emergency response contractors from all over the world. Our world-renowned program offers extensive, immersive, realistic training that includes full-scale scenarios to help responders be better prepared for surface transportation emergencies. We train first responders to do things right when things go wrong. Since our inception, SERTC has trained more than 74,000 professionals worldwide.

Our responsibility to you is to provide the very best hazmat training possible. We want you to understand the processes that are required to deal with a transportation accident involving hazmat and to understand the options that are available to you. Training on the actual transportation equipment that you’ll encounter in the field will help you to be prepared to deal with real world emergencies. Above all, we want you to be able to do your job safely and effectively.

We offer hands-on training based on OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (q) and NFPA Standard 472 requirements including Hazmat Awareness, Operations, Technician, Specialist Level Courses and Incident Commander as well as advanced refresher courses.
